Abstract

Chronic renal failure in adolescents is a major health problem and it is considered as the most common chronic disease of childhood. So the compliance to management plan is necessary to improve nutritional status, reduce uremia toxicity and delay renal deterioration and non adherence to medication and, other problems associated with end stage renal disease and dialysis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the compliance of the adolescents with chronic renal failure to their management plan. The study was carried out in out-patient clinic of the nephrology unit and hemodialysis unit at Mansoura Children’s University Hospital. The sample was consisted of 50 adolescents with chronic renal failure Three tools were used for data collection namely: Structured interview sheet, which designed by the researcher and included sociodemographic characteristics of adolescents and knowledge about chronic renal failure. Second tool was Adherence scale which was developed by Jacobson et al. ( 1990 ) to assess the level of compliance of adolescents to their management plan. The third tool was 24 hours recall method to assess adolescent’s adherence to diet regimen and fluids. The results revealed that adolescents’ compliance about dietary program, fluid intake, measurement of vital signs, medication, blood analysis, daily activities, fistula precautions, catheter care and follow-up were lacked in the first visit and improved significantly in the second and third visits. Also, adolescents’ knowledge about chronic renal failure was lacked before the health instructions and improved significantly after giving health instructions either immediately or after three months. Therefore, establishment of continuous educational programs for adolescents with chronic renal failure to provide them essential knowledge about disease and its management plan and developing an educational handout about chronic renal failure and its management plan for adolescents and their parents are recommended.
