Abstract

Cotton crop in A.R.E. produces some 1.5 – 2 tons of cotton stalks per feddan, and the annual yield is considered approximately 5 million ton. Most of this amount is in bunches over houses roofs to be used as energy source. Giving rise to serious hazard fire, besides it offers a convenient dwelling environment for cotton boll worms. The problem of cotton stalks disposal, is sufficient to generate greater interest in potential industrial application to give it a more powerful importance. The aim of this research is to study the possibility of using cotton stalks in manufacturing particle boards. The basic properties for cotton stalks particle board and its behavior under all conditions of loading were studied. The results were compared with those obtained from flax particle boards and natural woods.
Three types of cotton stalks were used. They were debarked, bolls striped and untreated stalks. Each of the previous three stalks types were flaked to three different sizes of chips (small, large, and variable size). Therefore nine types of raw materials from cotton stalks were obtained (three stalks types x three different sizes of chips).
