Abstract The present work was initiated to describe the algal vegetation of the above coasts, to offer wide spectrum for selection of these most common marine algae. Algal vegetation was conducted at four localities namely; Marsa-Matroh, Abu-Qir (along the coast of the Mediterranean sea), Ras-Bakr and Ras-Gharib (along the coast of Suez-gulf). Six species of most common marine algae (Corallina mediterranea, Pterocladia capillacea (Rhodophyta), Hormophysa triquetra, Sargassum subrepandum, Dictyota dichotoma (Phaeophyta) and Ulva fasciata (Chlorophyta) were selected. The attention was focused on evaluation of antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities of crude extracts of these 6 marine algae. The study of isolation and identification of bioactive compounds has attracted a considerable and increasing interest in this study because of their many immediate practical applications in our life. The present work was also planned to investigate the nutritional properties of these marine algae which usually determined from their biochemical composition such as their content of crude fibre, protein, carbohydrate, ash and lipids. Specific nutritional evaluation of these marine algae about amino acid composition has also been considered. |
