Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most common type worldwide; an estimated 1.23 million new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in 2008. It is less common in the Middle East than in the United States; however, it is among the 10 most common cancer types in all the countries. The age-standardized incidence rate is below 10 per 100,000 in most countries in this region, and ranges between 10 to 40 per 100,000 in a few countries such as Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait, and Israel. The process of cancer metastasis consists of a long series of sequential, interrelated steps. Each of these can be rate limiting, as a failure or an insufficiency at any of the steps can stop the entire process. The outcome of the process is dependent on both the intrinsic properties of the tumor cells and the responses of the host, malignant cells may invade the lymphatics directly or may gain access to them via blood vessels; also it can pass from blood to lymphatic channels and back again indicating that venolymphatic communications via the interstitial spaces of lymph nodes and other tissues exist. Aim of work: The aim of this study is to review different techniques of SLN mapping of CRC specimens, different methods of pathological examination and its impact on up or down staging of CRCs. Conclusions: Sentinel lymph nodes {SLN(s)} detected about 10-25% of patients with stage I or II (absence of lymph node metastases) as stage III so receive postoperative chemotherapy thus decrease recurrence rated and increase 5 year survival rates.
