Abstract Two experiments were carried out at the ”maryout desert Research Station” to evaluate the possible use of some blood and urine metabolites as indices for the field diagnosis of the nutritional state of grazing sheep. each experiment involved 20 mature rams in five experimental groups. In the first experiment the sheep were fed diets to satisfy their energy (TDN) intake, but the DCP intake varied between 114 and 25 per cent of the IIRC (1975) recommended allowances for maintenance. In the second experiment DCP intake was kept constant around 100% maintenance and TDN intake varied between 118 and 47 percent of the recommended ntenance. Each exper1aent lasted 60 days during which animals were housed and fed individual. Live body weights were recorded periodically and total faces and urine collections were carried out during the last 10 days. Blood samples taken at 0,3 and 8 hours poet-feeding were also taken for the analysis of blood urea nitrogen (lIUJf), lion-esterified fatty acide (NEFA) and creatinine nitrogen (CRTII-N).The data was anal1zed atatistioall1 using appropriate correlation and regression analysis to investigate relationship. between metabolite profiles and the enerq and protein nutritional status of the -101-... 1aals. Iloreover, the aa1.nt8llanoe protein requireant .. of local desert barked sheep was also investigated baaed on results from experiment 1 • |
