Abstract Two experiments were conducted at the Agriculture Experimental station farm, Mansoura university, Mansoura Egypt during seasons of 1993 and 1994 this investigation aimed to study the effect of treating eggplant seeds with low temperature within two different durations on growth , chemical composition, flowering, yield and quality of eggplant. The experiment included (10) treatments results from (5) seed-cold treatments (control, 0c ,-1c,-2c and -3c) and two different treatments durations (12 hours and 24 hours). The obtained result can be summarized as follows : 1- Vegetative growth characteristics : The duration of 24 hours compared with 12 hours significantly increased plant height, number of shoot, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight as well as leaf area per plant. However , the duration of 12 hours increased number of leaves per plant. Exposing seeds of eggplant to -3 c significantly increased plant height, number of shoots , stem diameter , fresh and dry weight as well as leaf area per plant as compared with the other used treatments . On the other hand, number of leaves decreased as a result of all used seed-cold treatments. |
