Abstract

The aim of the work: evaluation of safety and efficacy of lateral orbitotomy in management of orbital tumors. Material & Method: Study on 50 patients, lateral orbitotomy with bone flap was performed in all cases CT and MRI were performed preoperative follow-up after one week one monthe, 3 months & 6 months. Results: Lateral orbitotomy was successful in excision of all lesions that included, cavernous hemangioma, orbital lymphoma, Benign mixed gland tumor, adenoid cystic carcinoma, solitary neurofibroma, schwannoma, benign fibrous histocytoma and optic nerve glioma. lesions were excised using upper lid crease incision and S-shaped incision. There were a discrepancy in diagnosis in 36% of cases between radiology and pathology. Complications included, lateral rectus palsy in 2 cases and ptosis in one case. Conclusion: lateral orbitotomy is efficient for excision of tumors of lacrimal gland fossa and intraconal space, upper lid crease incision is more cosmetic for the approach, pathology is the definitive diagnosis.
