Abstract

Of 258 vaginal swab samples, Trichomonas vaginalis was detected in 67 (25.96%) by wet mounts with a sensitivity of 67.67%, in 66 (25.58%) by acridine orange-stained smears with a sensitivity of 66.66% and in 71 (27.51%) by Giemsa-stained smears with a sensitivity of 71.71%. Positive cultures were obtained from 99 (38.37%) samples by the modified Diamond’s medium with 100% sensitivity and from 96 (37.2%) samples by the InPouch medium with 96.96% sensitivity. Positive growth was obtained from most of the samples at 24-48h incubation, however, increasing the length of incubation time favors growth on InPouch medium than on Diamond’s medium. In other words, in using the InPouch medium it is advisable to extend the number of daily sampling of the culture medium. Positive antigen-detection test was recorded from 98 (37.98%) with 97.98% sensitivity and 99.37% specificity. As an objective test, antigen-detection eliminates the human subjective factors in conventional wet microscopy and in culture techniques. This point-of-care-test is expected to contribute significantly in the diagnosis of vaginal trichomoniasis and will vastly increase the understanding of its still vague epidemiology.
