Abstract

Adipose tissue is a complex, essential, and highly active metabolic and endocrine organ. Adipose tissue secretes hormones in response to specific extracellular stimuli, or changes in metabolic status. These hormones have been named collectively as “adipocytokines”. On the other hand, exercise represents one of the highest levels of extreme stresses to which the whole body can be exposed. Adipose tissue is one of the body organs that are greatly influenced by exercise. This study aimed at giving an idea about adipose tissue as an endocrine organ secreting numerous adipocytokines, and highlighting studies that investigated the effect of exercise on the secretion of the different adipocytokines and the expression of their receptors. We concluded from this study that although numerous studies had investigated the effect of exercise on the different adipocytokines but the results of these studies are controversial. We still need more information about the mechanisms through which exercise can affect the plasma levels of different adipocytokines and/or the expression of its receptors. The design of well controlled protocols to assess the effect of exercise apart from other associated factors as food intake, energy balance, and diurnal variations is mandatory. Also, special attention should be directed to the effect of exercise on adipocytokines receptors and the relation between exercise and adipocytokines in high risk groups as diabetes patients, patient with metabolic syndrome, overweight children, postmenopausal females, and cardiovascular patients.
