Abstract

Introduction The use of mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICUs) is a vital component of the care of critically ill patients and one of the most commonly used technologies in critical care unit. The aim of the study The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effect of implementing weaning guidelines on clinical outcome among mechanically ventilated patients. Setting This study was conducted in ICUs of Emergency Hospital and Main University Hospital. Stud Sample It carried out on sixty adult patients of both sexes who received mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours. The sixty Patients were assigned into two groups (control and intervention) thirty in each. The Control group involved patients who received the routine nursing care for weaning, while the intervention group involved patients who were weaned using weaning guidelines. Method The study was conducted through four phases. The first phase is ”Observation Phase”: during this phase the actual nursing practices related to weaning process and general nursing interventions for mechanically ventilated patients were observed by the researcher. The second phase is ”Developing Weaning Guidelines phase ”: during this phase the researcher developed weaning guidelines which were performed of several steps. The guidelines were written in two versions. The third phase is ”Implementation Phase”: during this phase the developed weaning guidelines were implemented for the intervention group The fourth phase is ”Evaluation Phase”: during this phase the outcomes of both control and intervention groups which include overall duration of mechanical ventilation, ICU Length of stay, incidence of mortality, or other complications were evaluated. Results In conclusion, our quasi experimental study demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing weaning guidelines in shortening the duration of MV, number of weaning trials, and length of stay without any adverse effects on patient outcomes.
