Abstract The effect of a total of 23 pharmaceutical materials - commenly Co-administered with antibiotics- on the antimicrobial activity of some non abgorbable antibiotics, namely, streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, polymyxin 3 and nystatin was studied. The materials used included the antacids, magnesium trisilicate and aluminum hydroxide; the demulcents, methyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and carbowaxes 4000 and 6000, the gastric protective and adsorbent materials, kaolin and pectin; the laxative, agar J and the suspen¬ding agents, sodium alginate, carbopol 934 and bentonite ; as well as many others such as ferrrous sulfate and cupper sulfate; vitamins, B1, and B6 ; the eudrigits ( RS100 , RSPM, RL100 RLPM and S90 ) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, The results obtained showed a good correlation between the dose-response curves, the MIC and MBC of each antibiotic ( in absence and in the presence of various materials ) on one side and the actual percentage of activity observed after incubation of the antibiotic with each, of those materials on the other side. |
