Abstract

About 45 samples of infant food formula were collected from the local market. Cerelac with cereal, fruits and vegetables had the highest fat content. Gerber with fruits had the highest
protein content. Nestle with wheat had the highest carbohydrate . content. Cerelac had the highest Na and K. Nestle with vegetable had the highest Ca. Nestle with wheat had the highest P and Fe. Riri had the highest vit A, D, E and C values. Gerber contained the highest vit B complex content. The lowest folic acid and biotin were found in Riri with cereal. Wheat germ was used in the manufacture of baby food
formula at the ratio of 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% and 90% with addition of 5% sugar and skim milk powder. Fat content, fiber and Fe increased with increase of the added ratio of wheat germ,
while carbohydrate, ash, Ca, P and K decreased. Vitamins A, D, E, C, B I, B2, B6 and B 12 increased, while folic acid, niacin, biotin and pantothenic acid decreased with the increase of the added ratio of wheat germ. The highest total score was obtained from
the treatment contained 85% wheat germ, 10% skim milk powder, 5% sugar and small amount of vanilla. Mothers were interviewed for their age, delivery time, economic, education levels and area of living. Also, the infants
ages and weights were recorded. 22% of mothers’ ages were ranged from 20-25.28% of mothers were house wives, 9% house wife + working in the field, 2% had professions and 11 % had
governmental work. 15% of birth were the third times in urban and 17% were the third times in rural. Time of weaning may reach two years or more. Most mothers’ preferred mix foods in the feeding of their infants. Baby’s weight ranged from 6 Kg at the first six months and up to 13 Kg at the age of two years. The aim of this study was evaluating the local baby food
samples, using wheat germ in the manufacture of different formula of baby foods with skim milk powder and sugar. Also a questionnaire for interviewing mothers was designed.
