Abstract

This Essay aimed to collect and study of some chemicopathological Egyptian studies in HCC especially tumour markers. It included 16 Egyptian studies and showed 21660 Egyptian patients with cirrhotic liver: 16693 male 77.1% and 4967 female 22.9% and also showed 2602 Egyptian patients with HCC : 2171 male 83.4% and 431 female 16.6%. HCC in Egypt was reported to account for about 4.7% of chronic liver diseased patients. In HCC patients the prevalence of hepatitis C was 79.6% & 86.9% in two different studies, while hepatitis B was 6.9% & 28.4%. The number of HCC had increased annually according to the studies which carried out from 1992 to 2007 in Cairo, Mansoura and Asuit Universities. The prevalence of HCC is high in Nile Delta area and more common in males 83.8% and rural residents 79.4%. In a trial for collection of studies concerning tumour markers of HCC in Egypt and evaluation of its significance, these studies showed the following results: AFP had been studied on 421 patients, its sensitivity was 66% and the specificity was 87% at cut-off value 25 ng/ml. There are some tumor markers which are more specific than AFP in diagnosis of HCC patients such as AFP-L3 & IGF-II and P16 methylation but they were less sensitive. On the other hand, there are some tumour markers which are more sensitive than AFP such as VEGF & HGF and TNF- but they are less specific. Another tumour marker which has the same sensitivity and specificity of AFP is PIVKA-II and when combined with AFP the sensitivity and specificity is increased so, it can used as a complementary to AFP in diagnosis of HCC patients. The study has come to the recommendation that it is necessary to register data base for research thesis and patients data on the Egyptian Universities sites to be easily assessed by all those who need to get benefit through this channel.
