Abstract Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the capacity to differentiate into several cell types. Stem cells also can be classified according to their source into embryonic and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst - stage embryos. They can differentiate into the cells of the three germ layers while adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells present among differentiated cells of nearly all tissues. The use of stem cells for repair of damaged tissues in the body is important for treating diseases that have no known therapy and need organ transplantation such as myocardial infarction, end stage liver diseases, cancers, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. |
