Abstract Centaurium pulchellum (SW.) Druce (Syns. Erythreae ramosissina (Vill.) pers, Erythraea pulchella (SW.) Fries, Gentiana pulchella (SW.), Gentiana ramosissima (Vill.) pers, Slender centaury) is an erect little branched annual herb with all more or less stalked flowers, arranged at the ends of short branches, the main stem of which attaining a height of about (30-50) cm. Reviewing the current literature proved the presence of xanthones, secoiridoids, alkaloids, triterpenes and phenolic acids in plant, but no further information could be traced concerning the macro- and micromoraphology of the different organs of the plant , and this stimulated the present work which includes: Part I Botanical study , including: the macro-and micromorphology of the different organs viz. stems, leaves, roots and flowers in the entire and powdered forms. Part II: Phytochemical study , including: phytochemical screening, extraction , fractionation, isolation and identification of the different constituents of the plant. Part III: Preliminary investigation of some pharmacological effects of the different extracts of Centaurium puchellum aerial parts including: a\ Anti-inflammatory and antipyretic. b\Activity on the central nervous system. c\ Effect on smooth muscle. d\ Effect on blood pressure. e\ Acute toxicity on mice. |
