Abstract The cotton plant (Gossypium barbadense L.) is one of the most economically important cultivated• plan~s in Egypt that belongs to family Malvaceae. It was stated that Gossypium species are rich in biologically active phenolic compounds of which gossypol is the most famous. Gossypol has attracted a worldwide interest since the discovery of its I male antifertility action. Reviewing the current literature, the following points were noticed : 1- There are no reports on the use of microbial transformation technique in studying the metabolic fate of gossypol. 2- In spite of the reported antimitotic activity of gossypol, it doesn’t interfere with the mitotic process in cotton plant. 3- The flavonoid pattern in Gossypium barbadense L. var. Giza 86 has not been subjected to any chemical or biological study. Therefore, this work was designed to achieve the following aims :1- Study the metabolic fate of gossypol using microbial transformation technique. 2- Evaluate the cytotoxicity, antitumor and antimitotic activities of gossypol m companson with those of its maJor metabolite gossypol one. 3- Carry out phytochemical and biological studies on the flavonoid content in Gossypium barbadense L. var. Giza 86. 4- Localize gossypol and other structurally related terpenoids in different tissues of cotton plant using histochemical techniques in order to explain why gossypol does not interfere with the mitotic process in the plant. |
