Abstract

This study was performed in Biochemistry and Chemistry of Nutrition Dept. Fac. Of Vet. Medicine, Mansoura University.
This study was carried out on forty female Spargue-Dawley rats. Animals were divided into four equal groups each of ten rats.
The first group (CA) is a control adult female rats two month of age and were feed with normal ration without feed additives. The other animals were aged animals of one years old then divided into three equal groups each one contained ten aged rats as the following: (Cag) is a control aged rats and were feed on the same ration without feed additives, (A) feed on the same ration with L-arginine (1.68%) and (C) feed on the same ration with L-carnitine (0.5 mg %) for four weeks. After the end of the experiment, blood (serum & whole blood) samples are collected from all the animals for the analysis of: estradiol, lipid profile and malondialdehyde, enzymatic (SOD and catalase) and non-enzymatic (GSH) antioxidant enzyme activities in the whole blood and tissue malondialdehyde contents. Tissue samples (liver, ovary and kidney) were collected for histopathological examination.
It is concluded that the effect of aging on some biochemical parameters are significantly decreased in SOD and catalase activities in erythrocytes, and decrease in reduced glutathione level. There was a significant decrease in serum HDL and estradiol. There was a significant increase in the level of serum MDA, total lipid, triacyglycerol and LDL.
Non significant difference in serum total cholesterol level. The oral administration of L-arginine for aged rats produces a significant decrease in serum MDA, total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL. There are significant increase in SOD and catalase activities and glutathione level in erythrocytes and in serum estradiol levels; a non significant change in total lipid and HDL in comparison with aged rats.
The effect of L-carnitine on some biochemical parameters shows significant increase in SOD and catalase activities and reduced glutathione level in erythrocytes.a significant decrease in serum total lipid, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and estradiol levels.
Non significant difference in MDA & HDL level in serum of rats compared with that aged group. The study advices that feeding on ration containing L-arginine and L-carnitine to aged rat will change the undesirable effect of aging. Like reduction in free radicals, increase antioxidants and enhance fertility in female rats.
