Abstract Overweight and obesity represent a rapidly growing threat to the health of ýpopulations in an increasing number of countries. Obesity contributes to numerous ýchronic diseases; and early mortality.ý ý ý Several etiological factors are involved in the development of obesity and, more ýrecently, it has been established that obesity has a partial genetic basis; thus it has ýbeen classified as a multifactorial disorder. So obesity should be approached as a ýchronic disease with genetic, environmental, and behavioral components. ý Evidence-based medicine, is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of ýcurrent best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.ý ý ý ý Effective therapeutic regimens for treating obesity should incorporate multiple ýapproaches and creative strategies to facilitate consistent and long-term follow-ýthrough. Numerous options are available including dietary intervention, physical ýactivity, behavior modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery. |
