Abstract

The present study aimed at identifying the required reading comprehension skills for the second year secondary stage students. These skills are necessary for reading ”The Reader”, the short story associated with the second year English language book Hello! 7. In this study, the SQ3R was used to develop the students’ reading skills, improve their achievement and comprehension in ”The Reader” and enhance their pleasure.. In addition, it provides students with opportunities to take responsibility for their learning. Thus, the effectiveness of the SQ3R in developing second year secondary students reading comprehension skills in ”The Reader” was investigated. The study made use of two instruments: 1) Reading comprehension Skills 2) an Achievement Test to measure the students’ development in the reading comprehension skills and. The researcher adopted the experimental design. One class was assigned to be the experimental group, studying the story through the SQ3R stages. Another class was assigned to be the control group, studying through the steps suggested by the Ministry of Education in Hello! 7 Teacher’s Guide. Results of the present study showed that students felt that they were identifying themselves with the characters and were involved in the story events as they were reading, interpreting. Students’ involving in such vivid SQ3R stages corresponding with ”The Reader” improved their achievement and comprehension. Thus, improving the achievement and comprehension enhanced pleasure. In addition, the SQ3R was effective in developing the reading comprehension skills for ”The Reader” of the second year secondary stage
