Abstract

Stem cells are defined as undifferentiated cells that possess two ‎properties: Unlimited self renewal and Potency. They are ‎differentiated according to their potency into totipotent stem cells, ‎pluripotent stem cells, multipotent stem cells and unipotent stem cells. ‎According to the source: Embryonic stem (ES) cells and Adult stem ‎cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner cell mass of ‎blastocyst-‎‏ ‏stage embryos generated in in vitro fertilization ‎laboratories. All other stem cells are referred to as Adult stem cells, ‎regardless the age from which the cells were derived as bone marrow ‎derived stem cells. Stem cells can change their appearance and assume ‎characteristics that resemble those of other tissue cells, this is known ‎as plasticity. There are at least four postulated mechanisms: ‎Transdifferentiation, cell fusion, bystander effect, and de-‎differentiation/ re-differentiation.‎ There are three broad groups of liver disease can be identified for the ‎purpose of cell therapeutic options: acute liver failure, inherited ‎metabolic liver diseases and end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis). ‎ The conditions and requirements of cell therapy differ for each of ‎these classes.‎
