Abstract The solar pond is a large area device for collecting and storing energy. Due to heating of the pond by solar energy, salt and heat are driven by thermally induced convection. The performance of a pond of completely mixed fluid was investigated; the balance equations of the pond were obtained. This work presenting the analysis of the shadow effect of the vertical side walls of the pond. The shadow of the vertical walls on the bottom of the pond was calculated for δ=0, +23.45, -23.45 and the analysis leads to the fact that the tilted side walls are better than vertical ones. For this reason a trapezoidal shape was chosen for the construction of the pond under test. |
