Abstract

Alloxan treated rats put on soybean-containing diet showed some improvement in their glucose tolerance. Still normal rats put on soybean-containing diet showed a higher glucose tolerance which may be due to the chelating power of phytic acid present in soybean to zinc which is necessary for insulin synthesis. The present study was designed to determine in vivo effects of soybean-containing diet and externally supplied with zinc either orally or by injection in ameliorating the hyperglycaemia caused by alloxan treated male albino rats weighing about 90 g. Induction of diabetes : Overnight fasted rats were subcutaneously injected with a single dose (120 mg/ kg body weight) of freshly prepared alloxan monohydrate. Zinc administration : 20 f g Zn/ 100 g. body weight were daily supplemented to the animals as znc12 (six day I week) for eight weeks either orally (by stomach tube) or by intraperitoneal injection. Animal Groups : The animals were divided into eight groups as follows: 1- Control group. 2- Alloxan treated group. 3- Normal group fed on soybean-containing diet.
