Abstract

Salivary T. content reflects the plasma unbound (i.e. biologically active) fraction of T. A good correlation between the levels of total T. in saliva and free T. in serum has been reported. hira Seminal plasma T. content does not reflect the plasma unbound fraction of T. No correlation between the levels of T. in semen and free T. in serum has been reported. Serum free T., salivary total T. and seminal plasma total and free T. in normal controls and infertile men before and after administration of Tamoxifen and Mesterolone therapy (10 normal healthy men and 23 asthenozoospermic infertile men were investigated. The statistical analysis of the results showed that : 1. T. levels in serum and saliva of asthenozoospermic infertile men were significantly decreased’ when compared « to the corresponding levels in normal healthy men. 2. Free T. levels in semen of asthenozoospermic infertile men were significantly increased when compared to the corresponding levels in normal healthy men. 3. T. levels in all body fluids studied in infertile men were significantly increased after treatment with Tamoxifen and Mesterolone . 4. There was a good correlation between serum free T. and salivary total T. In human saliva 78% of T. is free and’ 22% is in the bound form and probably bound to protein secreted by the sali vary glands .
