Abstract The aim of the present thesis is to study the diagnosis of chronic diarrhea in our locality using different aspects (clinical, endoscopic, histopathological, cytochemical, radiological and bacteriological examination). The material of this work comprised seventy three patients, presented with ’chronic diarrhea and ten normal subjects as a control group. They were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination besides the following investigations: Urine and stool analysis, bacterial culture of stool including quantitative study of E. coli, estimation of urinary D-xylose excretion, sigmoidoscopy, barium enema study, colonoscopy as well as blood picture, postprandial blood glucose level, liver function tests (serum albumin, S. bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, Alkine Phosphatase), kidney function tests (blurea .and S. creatinine), serum electrolytes (Na, K and Ca), and serum protein bound i6dine. Biopsies gaindby endoscopy were subjected to histbpathological and histochemical studies. Analysis of the results revealed that : Parasitic infections represented the commonest causes of diarrhea (68.5%). These included ;mixed parasitic infection. |
