Abstract

The present work was undertaken to study the histological as well as the histochemical activities of the normal thyroid gland or the rat. Twelve normal rats’ thyroid glands were dissected. Frozen sections were prepared from them and incubated for alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and non specific esterase activitieso Paraffin sections from these thyroid glands were stained with haematoxylin & eosin stain, Mallory’s stain, Gordon and Sweets’ reticulin stain, periodic acid Schiff’s reaction, Glees & Marsland’s modification of Beilschowsky silver method or incubated for alkaline phosphatase activity. The thyroid gland of the rat was formed of two lobes connected together by an isthmus. It was covered by two capsules. The outer one was continuous with the peritracheal fascia. The inner capsule was regarded as the true capsule of the gland. It was formed of collagenous connective tissue fibres which stained darkly blue with Mallory’s stain. The connective tissue septa divided the gland incompletely into lobules (Peudolobulation) ; The reticular connective tissue surrounded the individual follicles stained with Gordon and Sweets’ reticulin stain.
