Abstract

The aim of the present study is to clarify the genetic relatedness among Vigna cultivated species Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) and Mungbeans (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek.) and its related wild species as Vigna luteola (Jacq.) Benth. collected from two different ecotypes. Cytogenetics studies and morphological attributes as well as seed protein analysis have been conducted to compare the cultivated and wild relatives of eleven taxa of the genus Vigna in Egypt. all the studied taxa are diploid with twentytwo chromosomes in somatic cells. It is evident from the karyotype studies that none of the Vigna taxa investigated have identical chromosome sets; and two chromosome types (nsm () and nm) were common in all karyotype formulae. The electrophoretic analysis shows that twentysix bands of molecular weight ranging from 73.000 to 45.250 KD. The diversity and relatedness within and among studied taxa were evaluated using cluster analysis and PERMAPBiplot . As a result of estimates of genetic and phenotypic variances, broad sense heritability, Genetic and phenotypic coefficients variation and genetic advance for some attributes, a remarkable progress of the breeding program should be expected from Pod length and weight, seed weight and total chromosome volume. These traits would be useful as indirect selection for the best Vigna genotypes.
