Abstract

The studied area is one of the important areas among these interesting locations. It is the pyramid plateau. This work deals with the use of two geophysical techniques; shallow seismic refraction including the Pwave and Swave surveys and geoelectrical resistivity techniques in order to do the following 1. Identifications of the different subsurface rock units from the seismic and electric surveys 2. Evaluation of the geotechnical parameters of the Giza pyramids area 3. Detecting the major subsurface features affecting the area of the study 4. Searching for tombs, rooms, hidden tunnels, cavities and any valuable targets near to or around the pyramids Two geophysical techniques were applied at the Giza pyramids plateau; shallow seismic refraction and geoelectrical resistivity techniques. The shallow seismic refraction technique was applied in the form of conducting 76 seismic profiles, 38 for the longitudinal wave profiles (Pwave) and 38 for the shear wave profiles (Swave) at the same locations. Twenty three geotechnical parameters are stated with their physical meanings and their calculation?s equations. These parameters are calculated and tabulated. All these parameters are very good indicators of the degree of compactness. On the other hand, the geoelectrical surveys were applied at the pyramids area; where 34 2D imaging profiles were accomplished using the resistivitimeter model SyscalR2 (Iris instruments <U+2013> France) designed for this 2D resistivity measurements called multielectrode system. Finally the obtained results can be summarized in the following categories: <U+2022> Geologically, the Giza three pyramids are installed above the highest elevated part among the all Giza plateau and away from the major faults affecting the area. <U+2022> Seismically, the seismic data interpretation indicated the presence of three geoseismic layers, the highest velocity one is located near to and around the pyramids. <U+2022> Geotechnically, the calculated parameters portrayed a clear view of the areas of low, moderate and high compactness among the pyramids area. <U+2022> Geoelectrically, the 2D geoelectrical resistivity imaging mapped the probabilities of presence of cavities and/or archeological remains.
