Abstract

Infections due to intestinal parasites are common through out the tropics, posing serious public health problems in developing countries (Ramsy et al., 1991). In these parts of the world the high prevalence rate of intestinal parasite is attributed largely to socio-economic status, poor sanitation, inadequate medical care and absence of safe drinking water supplies ( Erko and Tedla, 1993). According to the WHO comment, the level of helminthic infections can be viewed as an index of a community’s progress towards a desirable level of sanitation (World Health Organization, 1987). Aim of work: Is to find the prevalence of intestinal parasites infections among Mansoura University residential students. Methods: This is a descriptive study carried out in Dakahlia Governorate during the period of 1 to 15 March and during 27 November to 12 December 2004. Target population: Residential students living in University hostels in Dakahlia Government. About 1113 students were included in the study. Out of them 418 were males and 695 were females. Their age range from 17 to 23 years. The University hostels included in the study are: 1-Al- Zahraa house University Hostel.2-Al- Glaa University Hospital. 3-Al- Amal University Hospital. 4-Gehan University Hospital. Stool Examination 1-Collection of faecal specimens (Garcia and Bruckner, 1988):2-Macroscopic Examination: Results: A total of 1113 students (695 of them were females and 418 were males with ages ranged from 17-23 years.) from Mansoura University residential students were included in this study from 1 to 15 March and from 27 November to 12 December 2004. All of these students were subjected to history taking with special stress on residence either rural or urban and gastro intestinal symptoms suggestive parasitic infection. Also they were subjected to general examination for pallor, signs of malnutrition and abdominal examination. Stool examination was done using direct smear method, formalin ether concentration technique, Trichrome staining and modified Zeihl - Neelsen staining techniques. The present work revealed that the most prevalent symptoms were abdominal pain 15% followed by constipation 8.1%, diarrhea 7.9%, dyspepsia 6.9%, and anorexia 6.6%. Which were significantly high in infected students but of low significant in detection of intestinal parasites and non specific. Conclusion: - Most symptoms of parasitic infections are nonspecific and many infected individuals are asymptomatic. - The most prevalent intestinal parasites were Entamoeba histolytica cyst, Giardia lamblia cyst, schistosoma mansoni, Ascaris lumbericoides, Enterobius vermicularis and Hymenolepis nana. - There were no significant difference in the prevalence of infections between males and females except S. mansoni which was more prevalence in males. - The prevalence of infection in students from urban localities was significantly lower than students from rural localities. - No hook worms infections were detected among students. - In the present study the prevalence of infection was significantly higher in Al- Glaa Hostel 87.5% with high prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica cyst 66.7% than other hostels and high prevalence of S. mansoni infection were detected in Gehan Hostel 4.3%.
