Abstract The aim of the work: Study the effect of cataract surgery and other factors on the progression of diabetic retinopathy. Materials & Methods : The study included 90 diabetic patients presenting with significant cataract, they were divided into three groups. Results : There is no significant difference in progression of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy in eyes underwent phacoemulsification surgery. But, there is significant difference in progression of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy between ECCE operated eyes and non operated eyes. While at the third group there is no significant difference in progression of maculopathy between ECCE operated eyes and phacoemulsification operated eyes. Conclusion :Uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery is associated with favorable post operative visual outcome and less progression in diabetic retinopathy, and any progression that does occurred postoperatively represent the natural history of the disease. |
