Abstract
The present study was conducted at El- Serw Experimental Research Station, Animal production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and the Animal Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University during the period from 2002 to 2004. The main objectives of this work were to investigate the effects of using chamomile flowers (Matricaria chamomile) at different levels (0 - 1 and 2 g I head I day) on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Nutrients digestibility and feeding value, some rumen parameters and blood constituents were also studied. Additionally, the effect of these dietary treatments on the histology of digestive tract and kidneys was examined.
Three digestibility trials were conducted on 9 adult Rahmani sheep averaged about 68.43 kg body weights. They were divided into 3 equal groups ( 3 rams in each ) . During the last day of the digestion trail, rumen liquor samples were taken from each animal before feeding and 2 , 4 and 6 hrs post feeding for determination of pH values and ammonia-N and total VF A’S concentrations as well as microbial protein level and protozoa number.
Twenty one growing male Rahmani lambs, with an average age of 3-4 months and weighing on average 19.87 kg were used. The animals were divided randomly into 3 equals groups as follows:
G1: Concentrate feed mixture (CFM) + yellow com (YC) + berseem hay (BH) (control, G1).
G2: G 1 + 1g chamomile I head I day (treatment 1, G2).
G3: G 1 + 2g chamomile I head I day (treatment 2, G3).
