Abstract

Metrology is the name given to the science of pure measurement for engineering purposes. In fact, no measurement can be absolutely accurate. There are always some errors which depend upon the accuracy and design of the measuring equipment employed, the skill of the operator, the method adapted for the measurement and the temperature degree. Due to rapid progress of production technology, contactless, humanfree inspection and measurement for visual appearance, is becoming an important and indispensable task of the production process. Thus, introducing automated visual inspection and measurement systems are violet. These systems are based on computer vision techniques, which become a must for many reasons such as increasing productivity and improve the product quality; matching highspeed production with highspeed inspection; carrying out the higher rate of inspection process; saving labor costs; increasing the accuracy and reliability of inspection; freeing humans from the dull and routine. The contact type probing system of the Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) is unsuitable for accurate and quick measuring of thin, small and delicate components such as an Integrate Circuit (IC) lead frame, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and rubber parts. On the other hand, the contactless measurement vision systems allow quick and accurate measurements. Furthermore, using the PCbased vision system is considered relatively inexpensive when compared with other inspection equipments. Therefore, computer vision techniques are applied in the field of ?Metrology? to carry out the measurement and inspection processes of threedimensional (3D) mechanical parts. In this work, a simple and easy vision system has been introduced to measure and inspect 3D products. The system is integrated with popular CAD systems such as AutoCAD, Proengineer and Solid Edge to export the extracted products for further editing and modification. In addition, an inspection technique has been built to be used in quality control operations.
