Abstract

Due to the importance of photoactive polymer films in many technological processes such as integrated optics, this thesis concerns with studying the different methods for measuring the optical constants of thin films to find the suitable method for routine measurements for photoactive polymer thin films. In order to achieve this goal, the different methods are applied to simulated thin films of known optical constants to compare their accuracies. It is found that the numerical solution is the suitable method for photoactive polymer thin films so PMMA films doped with different concentrations of photoactive unit are characterized using numerical solution. Controlled dip coating unit is designed to avoid instability in motion and to perform preparation automatically for having thin films of good optical quality. It is used to study the different factors that can affect the thickness of thin film such as dipping time, withdrawal speed, and solution viscosity.
