Abstract

Spondylolysis is a unilateral or bilateral defect of the pars interarticularis which, in combination with other factors may permit forward slippage of one vertebra on the one below, producing a spondylolisthesis In this study , 20 patients suffering from spondylolisthesis were evaluated and selected for surgical intervention.all patients show no improvement by conservative treatment befor the decision of surgeryThe mean age of studied cases 43.2 years .so in our study according to the age there was no cases less than 20 years ,age between 20 to40 years , 8cases ( 40%),on the other hand ,age between 40to 60 ,12cases of (60 %) of cases . However there is a great variation among the groups 6cases for degenerative of 33.3% age of 51 years , and 14 cases for isthmic of 66.7% age of 37.1 This is in agreement with other studies in that the isthmic groups always occurs in young patients (Fr,berg,1987:36.8 years ;Kaneda ,et al ,;43.5 years Kim,et al.1990;29 years ). Lombardi,et al,1985; epstein et al,1983 and others repot that degenerative spondylolisthesis is rare below the age of 50 years and has not been reported below the age of 40 years, this was matched with our study, and the mean age for this group was 55 years. Dall and rowe, 1985 recorded a mean age of 60.5 years in their study, whereas herron and trippi, 1989, recorded 76 years.
