Abstract

The progress in biotechnology was of paramount importance in the appearance of several recent techniques. One of these technique is flow cytometry. The estimation of cellular DNA content by flow cytometry is widely used in the study of neoplasia , because changes in DNA content have been shown to closely correlate with chromosomal changes seen in malignancy. The esophagus is a sensitive and special organ in the human body, because of its volume and its position . This study was done on 52 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy at the out­patient clinic of Gastroenterology Center, Mansoura University .By studying histologic state , it was found that 13 cases had normal esophageal mucosa ( control) 11 cases were esophagitis , 9 cases were Barrett?s esophagus and the remaining 19 were esophageal carcinoma. The analysis of DNA content showed that control subjects and all cases of esophagitis were diploid. Abnormal DNA Content was detected in 22 % of Barrett?s esophagus. The higher incidence of abnormal DNA­content was found in patients with esophageal carcinoma, whereas aneuploidy was detected in 52.6 % of cases. The results showed that the quantitative analysis of nuclear DNA content and cellular proliferative activity in esophageal lesions appear to be specific and reliable biochemical markers and can offer additional objective information about the aggressiveness and activity of these lesions.
