Abstract

This study was done This study was done to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of bisphosphonates on bone wound healing histologically and histochemically in guninea pigs.
Material and Methods:
Forty two adult guinea pigs weighing 400 - 500 gm were divided into two main groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group contains thirty animals and the control group contains twelve animals. Each group was divided into 3 subgroups A, B, and C according to the period at which the animals were sacrificed. All animals were subjected to surgery in the manible under general anaesthesia which composed of sodium pentobarbital (50mg/kg) induced by intraperitonial injection . Further 1.8 ml Mepecaine were injected locally into the area of surgery to provide local hemostasis (as it contain 1/80 000 adrenaline vasoconstrictor) and postoperative analgesia.
The hair of the skin was shaved above the area of surgery and disinfected povidine-iodine disinfecting agent. A clean cut horizontal incision was created along the chin area of the outer surface of mandible using a surgical blade mounted on scalpel handle . The incision line cross the midline from right to left. Dissection of the skin was made upward and downward to expose the bone of the mandible. Using a rose head bur size no 4 attached to a contra angle that was mounted on a micromotor (low speed) device, a bone defect was created on the right side immediately adjacent to the midline and just above the lower border of the mandible buccally, together with cooling system by normal saline
