Abstract Schistosomiasis is considered as one of the most important parasitic helminthic diseases in many developing countries including Egypt and constitutes a major health problem affecting man’s health and productivity. This study was performed with the aim of: Evaluation of colonoscopic, histopathologic changes of the colon and changes in eosinophilic cationic protein in patients with schistosomal colitis both before and after treatment with commiphora molmol in a trial to asses its effect on these parameters and the functional status of the colon. This study was conducted on: fifty patients with schistosomal colitis proved by rectal and colonic mucosal biopsies examination referred to Mansoura University Hospital. This study has shown that: 2 Commiphora molmol can be used as effective antischistosomal drug with high safety; it can be used in community-based programs for schistosomiasis prevention and control. 2 There is no determining factor for increased responsiveness to treatment as regard age, sex, body weight and hepatosplenic affection 2 Some patients who are resistant to treatment with it can benefit from increasing the period of exposure to the drug by the same daily dose. 2 Prevention of reexposure or prophylactic use of the drug is an important factor in preventing reinfection. 2 Eosinophilic count and eosinophilic cationic protein can be used as markers of infection unless patients have received treatment recently. |
