Abstract
The present study used a cross-sectional, community- based and case-control approach for juvenile arthritis among school students in Dakahila governorate, it was carried out on a representative sample of Dakahlia school children, during the period from the beginning of October, 2000 to the end of April 2001. A sample of 8178 school students was drawn from randomly selected, eight schools from Dakahlia Governorate schools. All students were subjected to specifically designed questionnaire and preliminary clinical examination to elicit any history or sign relevant to musculoskeletal system. Those who had such manifestations were referred to Mansoura University Hospital and were subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination laboratory and radiological investigations in order to reach the proper diagnosis. The results of this study revealed an over all prevalence of arthritis of 5.1/1000, 20 cases of RhF/RHD with a prevalence of 2.4/1000 and 0.4/1000 school student for recurrent active RhF/RHD. The number of confirmed, JRA cases (17) in the present study is approaching that of RhF/RHD with an overall prevalence of 2.1/1000 children at risk. The prevalences of FMF and JDM were 0.1/1000 school students for each and the prevalence of acute transient arthritis was 0.2 school students.
