Abstract

Conjunctivitis is still one of the most frequently seen eye disease especially in infants and children in Egypt. The Aim of the present study is to correlate between the pH and different etiological types of acute conjunctivitis and to find out the effect of changing the pH on the course of the disease and also the effect of treatment. Cases of acute bacterial conjunctivitis, acute viral conjunctivitis and acute allergic conjunctivitis were evaluated in this study. This study was conducted over a period of 18 months, Starting from Marsh 2000 to September 2001. The patients in this study were divided into three groups. Group A: Composed of 39 eyes of 20 patients that did not suffer any acute conjunctivitis or other inflammatory disease of anterior segment. Group B (buffer treated group): 125 eyes of 75 patients suffering from acute conjunctivitis. Group C (B.S.S. treated group): 140 eyes of 86 patients suffering from acute conjunctivitis. Patient in-group B and group C were again classified into three subgroups, acute bacterial conjunctivitis, acute viral conjunctivitis and acute allergic conjunctivitis. All groups were undergoing diagnostic schedule and therapeutic schedule. Diagnostic schedule: Involved History taking and ophthalmological examinations, measurement of pH by using pH paper, Conjunctival culture and Sensitivity tests finally Coagulase test. Therapeutic schedule: Group B treated by installing Sodium Bicarbonate 3% lotion every hour for 7 day’s, for patients with acidic pH, and installing Boric acid 4% lotion every hour for patients with alkaline pH and group C treated by installing B.S.S. The present study showed that In cases of acute bacterial conjunctivitis group (B1) 50% of studied eyes were cured within one week by using sodium bicarbonate 3% eye drops, and this result was near to the result of group (C1) which treated by B.S.S. in the same method (53% was cured). In cases of acute viral conjunctivitis group (B2) we found that 40% of studied eyes were cured within one week of using boric acid 4% eye drops, and this result was near to the result of group (C2) which treated by B.S.S. in the same method (35.5% was cured). In cases of acute allergic conjunctivitis group (B3) we found that 38.7% of studied eyes were improved within one week of using boric acid 4% eye drops, and this result was near to the result of group (C3) which treated by B.S.S. in the same method (29.5% was improved). By comparison between the result in group B and group C, it is concluded that there was no significant different between boric acid 4%, sodium bicarbonate 3% and B.S.S. eye drops in the treatment of acute conjunctivitis. The present study conclude that using pH paper is an easy, fast method in testing of the conjunctival discharge in spite of the limited range being a subjective method.
