Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of preoperative oral clonidine premedication on haemodynamics and analgesic requirements in patients anaesthetized with sufentanil-propofol intravenous anaesthesia during abdominal surgery. Forty patients were included in this study. They were randomly allocated into two equal groups. Patients of the first this group did not receive oral drugs preoperatively, while patients of the second group received oral clonidine (5 ug / kg) administered one and half hours before surgery. Mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, level of sedation, pain score, and concomitant complications were recorded. There was a significant decrease in mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate values in the clonidine group compared with the control group and with the basal values. Analgesia and sedation were more satisfactory in the clonidine group. We conclude that oral clonidine administration may be considered as a possible approach to postoperative pain management in patients recovering from abdominal surgery.
