Abstract

Today’s girls are the future mothers. They are in need of proper support, empowerement and care. They are also in need of health education to provide them with valid and trusted health knowledge. students constitute the greatest single readily reachable population group providing the ideal opportunity for achieving a brighter health future through comprehensive school-based health education programmes. The aims of the present study are: to assess knowledge of secondary school girls to detect defects and misconceptions regarding the following topics:personal hygiene, sport-practice and periods of rest and sleep, sound nutrition and physical growth, dental health, mental and social health, reproductive health and family life, modes of transmission of infectious diseases and their prevention, cigarette smoking and drug addiction, safety and first aid measures, and environmental health, to apply a designed comprehensive health education programme including messages about the previously mentioned topics, and to evaluate the effectiveness of this health education programme. An intervention study, which lasted for one scholastic year (From October 1998 to April 1999) was conducted upon a randomly selected sample of 3457 secondary school girl students who were selected from randomly chosen schools (Two schools for general education and two schools for technical education) in Mansoura City. A designed comprehensive health education programme was implemented and its impact was evaluated using a pretest / post-test questionnaire. The questionnaire sheet included general basic data, sociodemographic data.
