Abstract
One hundred patients and twenty healthy controls with the diagnosis of biliary colic presented at the surgery outpatient clinics of Mansura University Hospital, and Armed Forces Hospital, Mustafa Kamel, Alexandria, from January 1997 to August 1999, were studied and followed up. Patients were divided into two groups, first group with calcular biliary colic, while second group with acalcular biliary .. colic. The healthy controls ~rmed the third group. Their age ranged from 25 and 65 years, with a mean age of 42 years, with no statistically significant difference between both patients’ groups. The female to male ratio was 1.8: I, with no statistically significant difference between both patients’ groups. The most common presenting symptom was biliary colic, which occurred in 1000/0 of patients, followed by dyspepsia which occurred only in 700/0 of cases. Abdominal ultrasonography was performed in all patients and 500/0 were proved to have gall bladder stones.
