Abstract A skull fracture is depressed if the outer table of one of the hone fragments is driven inward so that it lies below the level of the, inner table of the surrounding intact skull. This type of fracture occurs when an object with a relatively larue amount of kinetic energy makes contact with the skull over a small area. The fracture of the outer table almost always is larger than the one involving the inner table. Clinical studies have shown that about 261X, of all patients with severe head injury have a linear fractures of the vault, in l11X, of the patients , the fracture of the vault is depressed, 851X, of patients are males and most are younger than 30 years of age. Thv associated mortality rate is relatively low ( l11X, ) and is related to the severity of eNS injury rather than to the fracture itself. Between 5 & 7 IX, of patients have co-existing intracranial haematomas , and 12IX, have involvement of an underlying venous SIllUS • Depressed fractures are classified as closed ( simple ) with ahseuce of overlying wound and open ( compound) in its presence, while ping pong fractures are those occuring in children and resemble greenstick fractures of long bones. Clinical presentation include : history of head trauma commonly due to falls . Majority of cases are the children .821X, of cast’S shows scalp wound (i.e. compound) Amnesia is found in about 5()IX, of cases. Other clinical manifl’station include : disturbed level of cunscruusness , limb paresis , dysphasia, fracture base of the skull , and seizures. |
