Abstract Bleeding from ruptured oesophageal varices is one of the major health problem in many areas of the world specially in Egypt where schistosomasis and hepatitis are pervalent . It results in great morbidity and mortality despite the different therapeatic options . Endoscopic injection sclerotherapy is widely used to arrest acute oesophageal variceal bleeding. The techinque of EVL was developed recenty for the same purpose as EIS with fewer complication . The aim of the present work is to compare the efficacy and safy of both techniques (EIS, EVL) in treating acute bleeding from oesphageal varies and a trial to evaluate the most effective method with less complication . The study was conducted on 360 patients with active oesophageal variceal bleeding admitted at the unit of haematemesis and mae1ena, Mansoura Emergency Hospital.
