Abstract The first attempted orthotopic liver transplantation was reported in 1963 by starzl in the university of colorado in USA. At first, the results was not satisfactory and the patient survival postoperatively was decreased. Step by step the results improved and the numbers of patients fit for surgery gradually increased. Understanding of the pathophysiology of end stage liver diseases has an important role in improvement of the results of liver transplantation. Broader application of cyclosporine to liver h’ansplantation resulting in improved patient and graft survival. Improvement in graft preservation and operative technique solidified the role of liver transplantation for patients with end liver disease. The major parameters considered in selecting patients for liver transplantation include, disease category, clinical status, presence of possible contra indication both absolute and relative. |
