Abstract
Osteoarthritis frequently affect the knee joint and can cause profound changes in the int and surrounding soft tissues . These changes include cartilage degeneration , bchondral sclerosis, osteophytosis and other changes affecting synovial membrane, apsule and ligaments . The present study aim to determine whether MRI could demonstrate changes that ere not visible on plain radiography of the osteoarthritic knee joints. Twenty atients with clinical and radiological evidence of osteoarthritis of both knee joints were chosen. The diagnosis of osteoarthritis was based on x - ray evidence of joint space narrowing , subchondral sclerosis or osteophyte formation and symptoms of pain in the affected knee on motion or at rest plus at least one of the following : tenderness with pressure, mild swelling, crepitus on motion, or stiffness , either in the morning or after prolonged inactivity. Ten volunteers with asymptomatic knee joints, matched for age and sex with the group of osteoarthritis served as the control group . Each knee joint was evaluated clinically and radiologically with plain .
