Abstract
The aim of our study is to study the functional status of HPA axis in the elderly subjects, and its relation to sleep disorders and senile dementia which are common in the old age. Our study comprises 50 patients divided into 5 groups:- * 1st group (10 healthy subjects): Serum cortisol and ACTH (a.m. & p.m.) and total urinary cortisol /24 h are done for those healthy elderly subjects . * 2nd group (10 young control subjects): For whom serum cortisol & ACTH (a.m. & p.m.) and total urinary cortisol /24 h are done. 3rd group (10 elderly subjects): For whom the overnight DST was done. * 4th group (10 young control subjects): For whom the overnight DST was done. * 5th group (10 elderly subjects): Who were complaining of sleep disorders or senile dementia. All patients were subjected to:- *Through history taking & full clinical examination and the following investigations:- Complete blood picture -S.creatinine. -Liver function tests (S.bilirubin, SGPT, SGOT & S.albumin). -Fasting & post-prandial blood sugar. That is to exclude systemic diseases.
