Abstract EVS has become the principal method for treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices. This procedure, however, was reported to be associated with bacteremia and may be associated with bacterial peritonitis. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bacterial peritonitis after emergency sclerotherapy for variceal haemorrhage. The study was conducted on 50 patients; 37 male and 13 female who were admitted to Mansoura Emergency Hospital. All patients had the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis, significant ascites and acutely bleeding oesophageal varices. The patients were studied prospectively to determine the incidence of bacterial peritonitis following emergency EVS. Patients enrolled in the study were subjected to: thorough history taking, full clinical examination, full laboratory investigations, plain x¬ray chest, abdominal ultrasonography and initial ascitic fluid analysis. |
