Abstract

This work aimed to study the efficacy of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy both in aphakic eyes following ECCE and pseudophakic eyes, with recording the resulting complications. The study included 50 eyes suffering from opacification of the posterior capsule. 30 eyes were aphakic and 20 eyes were pseudophakic. Out of the 50, 36% had a thin membrane and were treated with 1-2 mj/pulse. 52% had a moderately thick membrane and were treated with 2-4 mj/pulse. 12% had a thick membrane and were treated with 3-5 mj/pulse. Analysis of the results showed:
-Improvement of visual acuity in 90% of cases by one or more Snellen’s line.
-Capsulotomy size varied between 2-3 mm.
-The recorded complications included
-Transient lOP elevation ≥ 29 mmHg one hour after YAG laser treatment in 22% of cases, persistent in 4% of cases.
-IOL damage in 15% of cases.
- Irisbleeding in 8% of cases.
- Retinal detachment in 2% of cases.
- Cystoid macular oedema in 20/0 of cases.
-Late closure of capsulotomy opening in 2% of cases.
