Abstract

Four thousands and two subjeots were randomly se1eoted to determine the distribution of oou1ar tension in the adult and elderly Egyptian population and to relate ocular tension to various faotors e.g. age and sex. They were of different ages, sexes, looalities, oooupations, and standard of living. Some diabetic patients were examined to show the effeot of diabetes on ooular tension. Ooular examination were performed with speoial atten¬tion to visual aouity, measuring the ooular tension by Sohiotz-tonometer, Ophthalmosoopy, further investigations were done when indioated. All subjects were classified into different age-groups. About 70% of the examined population have ocular tension between 13-19 mmHg. with a mean ocular tension of 16.17 ± 2.49 mmHg. standard deviation with no sex difference. It was found that above 35 years old, ooular tension dec¬reases with aging. The mean ooular tension in diabetios was higher than in non diabetics. In the range of 10-21 mmHg, the ourve for ocular ten¬sion distribution was Gaussian, however, it skewed to the right with high readings.
