Abstract

This study done to find out the effect of different techniques of cataract extraction on corneal thickness. Two hundred, twenty six eyes with cataract of one hundred, sixty six patients of different ages were included in the study. They were selected from patients admitted to Ophthalmology Department of Mansoura University Hospital, for cataract extraction. They were 84 males and The preoperative corneal thickness was measured for each of the eyes included in the study, in the central and 8 peripheral positions using TEKNAR OPH-THASONIC PACHOMETER. The eyes were classified into 4 groups, the first group (76 eyes) undewent ICCE, the 2 nd group (72 eyes) underwent ECCE, the 3 rd group underwent ECCE with PC.IOL implantation, while the 4 th group underwent aspiration. Follow up of these eyes for corneal thickness which was measured by TEK¬ , NAR OPHTHASONIC PACHOMETER on the 3 rd postoperative day and eve¬ry week for one month, then every 2 weeks for another month. All the data obtained were statistically analysed. It was found that, there was an increase in both central and peripheral corneal thickness after cataract extraction which reached its maximum on the 3 rd postoperative day then a gradual return to preoperative thickness within 2 months after the operation took place.
